submitted Oct 22, 2026 by @david 149
OverviewThis map provides a foundational overview of institutional and regulatory accountability in the 2008 crisis. It relies heavily on official findings from the FCIC and the Senate Levin-Coburn inquiry, focusing on bank misconduct, regulatory negligence, and derivative risks. Its argument centers on avoidable human action rather than uncontrollable market forces.

Forked from What caused the 2008 financial crisis?
OverviewThis map assesses the macroeconomic hypothesis that prolonged low interest rates by the Federal Reserve fueled the housing bubble. It contrasts John Taylor's rule-deviation simulations with Fed staff analyses and international data. It balances monetary policy arguments against the timing of mortgage originations and price cycles.

Themes across the family
A broad read of every map in this family: the themes that run through them and how each map treats them. Structured scans give a more targeted side-by-side.
Systemic Regulatory and Governance Failures
3 of 3 mapsThe family consistently demonstrates that the crisis was fundamentally avoidable and driven by human decisions, widespread lapses in regulatory enforcement, and unchecked corporate risk-taking.
M1What caused the 2008 financial crisis?
Presents systemic regulatory failure, lack of oversight, and pervasive corporate conflicts of interest as the central drivers of the collapse.
M2Government Housing Mandates and GSE Quotas Sparked the Subprime Crisis
Incorporates commission findings on regulatory and corporate governance breakdowns alongside its examination of mortgage policy.
M3Prolonged Low Interest Rates and Global Capital Inflows Created the Bubble

M1What caused the 2008 financial crisis?
Cites congressional findings that explicitly discount government housing policy as the primary cause in favor of private conflicts of interest.
M3Prolonged Low Interest Rates and Global Capital Inflows Created the Bubble
Notes the congressional finding rejecting government housing policy as the core crisis driver.
Monetary Policy and the Housing Bubble
2 of 3 mapsThe family evaluates whether prolonged low interest rates set by the Federal Reserve generated the housing bubble or merely coincided with broader market dynamics.
M3Prolonged Low Interest Rates and Global Capital Inflows Created the Bubble
Directly probes whether the 1.0% federal funds rate in 2003–2004 and Taylor rule deviations initiated the mortgage boom, evaluating both supporting and dissenting econometric studies.
M1What caused the 2008 financial crisis?
Focuses primarily on micro-level financial and regulatory mechanisms rather than macroeconomic interest rate policy.
Derivatives, Leverage, and Counterparty Contagion
3 of 3 mapsThe family documents how excessive borrowing, credit default swaps, and shadow-banking contagion mechanisms transformed mortgage defaults into a broader financial collapse.

Details how OTC derivatives and AIG's collateral calls converted subprime mortgage deterioration into a systemic liquidity panic.
M2Government Housing Mandates and GSE Quotas Sparked the Subprime Crisis
Affirms the pivotal role of derivatives and broker-dealer leverage alongside its housing policy focus.
M3Prolonged Low Interest Rates and Global Capital Inflows Created the Bubble
Shares identical findings on AIG derivative collateral demands and SEC oversight of investment bank leverage.
